 Covid-19: 4 482 new infections as death toll rises by 82

South Africa recorded 4 482 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Sunday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 3 526 054 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 82 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 92 453.

The NICD said the 4 482 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 17.6% positivity rate.

As of Sunday, Gauteng recorded 1 148 061 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 629 101 and the Western Cape 611 501.

Most new cases recorded on Sunday were in the Western Cape, which accounted for 26% of new infections, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 23%. Gauteng accounted for 22% of the new cases; Eastern Cape 8%; Northern Cape 6%; Free State 5%; Mpumalanga and North West 4% each; and Limpopo 3%.

The Western Cape recorded 1 150 new cases on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal 1 037 and Gauteng 966.

There were 80 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Sunday, 8 891 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 21 553 366 cumulative tests, of which 25 430 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 28 329 788 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 4 056 were administered on Sunday.

To date, 15 786 901 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 985 283 vaccine doses have been administered.
