Covid-19: 3 085 new infections, 23 new deaths recorded in South Africa

South Africa recorded 3 085 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, which represented an 8.8% positivity rate.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Tuesday, the country recorded 3 608 307 laboratory-confirmed cases. In the last 48 hours, 23 new Covid-19-related deaths were reported, bringing the confirmed death toll to 95 288.

As of Tuesday, Gauteng recorded 1 169 247 cases, KwaZulu-Natal 643 076 and the Western Cape 628 478.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 32% of new infections, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, which accounted for 14% each. Mpumalanga accounted for 9%; the Free State and Limpopo 8% each; North West 7%; the Eastern Cape 6%; and the Northern Cape 3%.

Gauteng recorded 1 001 new cases on Tuesday, the Western Cape 427 and KwaZulu-Natal 419.

There were 103 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Tuesday, 5 194 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 22 303 586 cumulative tests, of which 35 067 were carried out in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 29 957 898 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 69 268 were administered on Tuesday.

To date, 16 505 678 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 246 580 vaccine doses have been administered.
