 Covid-19: 1 752 new infections, 8 new deaths recorded in South Africa

South Africa recorded 1 752 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, which represented an 8% positivity rate.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 3 623 962 laboratory-confirmed cases. In the last 48 hours, eight new Covid-19-related deaths were recorded, bringing the confirmed death toll to 95 835.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 34% of new infections, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 17%. The Western Cape accounted for 15%; Mpumalanga 9%; North West 8%; Free State and Limpopo 5% each; Eastern Cape 3%; and Northern Cape 2%.

Gauteng recorded 604 new cases on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal 291 and the Western Cape 263.

As of Sunday, Gauteng recorded 1 174 292 laboratory-confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 645 055 and the Western Cape 630 955.

In the last 24-hour reporting cycle, there were 20 new hospital admissions. As of Sunday, 4 696 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 22 464 999 cumulative tests, of which 21 800 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 30 189 745 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 3 831 were administered on Sunday.

To date, 16 589 304 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 296 719 vaccine doses have been administered.
