The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the inclusion of the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the Group of 20 (G20), lauding the move as important for global economic stability and equitable representation.

The ANC has praised the “pivotal role” played by President Cyril Ramaphosa in advocating for the AU’s inclusion in the G20, and stressed the need for African perspectives and solutions in addressing global challenges, fostering cooperation and promoting the continent’s interests on the global stage.

The party has highlighted the significant role played by the G20 in facilitating dialogue on issues such as trade, finance, and sustainable development, as well as coordinating policies that would have an impact on the world economy.

“The ANC’s vision of a thriving Africa is rooted in a commitment to economic growth, social development, and political stability across the continent. This dream envisions a prosperous Africa where nations work together to address common challenges, eradicate poverty, ensure access to quality education and healthcare, and promote good governance. It reflects the ANC’s enduring aspiration for a united and flourishing Africa that benefits all its people and contributes positively to the global community. South Africa continues to stand as a central player not only within the African continent but also beyond its borders,” said ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.

In affirming its commitment to multilateralism, the party has acknowledged its role in lobbying for the AU to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, arguing that the Security Council should be more representative and reflective of the global power balance.
