After years of inaction, thugs continue to hold our economy hostage

Police Minister Bheki Cele

The Good party calls on the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele and Minister of Transport, Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga to urgently work together to find a long-term solution to the threat made against truck drivers on South Africa’s roads.

It is unacceptable that after years on inaction these acts of sabotage and violence continue to hold our already fragile economy hostage.

On Sunday, the N3, one of SA’s mayor transport corridors, was shut for hours following the torching of 6 trucks on Van Reenen pass.

Less than 24 hours later another five trucks have burnt on the N4 highway in Mpumalanga.

These incidents have major consequences for the country’s economy and the prospects of job-creating growth.

If these senseless attacks are allowed to continue unchecked, businesses will find safer routes using neighbouring countries to transport cargo.

It is a massive failure of leadership that cargo is forced to be transported by road instead of rail due to corruption, mismanagement and the inability to restore our current rail infrastructure to functionality.

We hope the culprits behind these attacks face the full might of the law.
