Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
The more than 1.5 million rounds of ammunition looted from a container depot in Durban begs the question – beside the obvious safety concerns – why ammunition wholesalers find it necessary to import bullets when these can be produced locally at the Denel Pretoria Metal Pressings (PMP) facility.
Denel’s financial woes have been widely publicised as has the case of its workers’ continued battle for their full salaries and benefits as per contractual agreement with the entity.
The import of ammunition robs workers at Denel of jobs and income at a time when we can hardly afford to lose more jobs.
UASA urges South African to buy and use locally produced goods.
We continue the fight for the rights and livelihood of our members employed at Denel and we call on government to do the necessary to save the SOE and the jobs of those employed by the enterprise.
