You are still more likely to find employment in the Western Cape than in any other province. This was revealed in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the 2nd Quarter of 2024, released yesterday by StatsSA.
The Western Cape had a 27.3% expanded unemployment rate in the 2nd quarter, which is 11.9 percentage points lower than the next best performing province, the supposed economic capital of the country, Gauteng.
The Western Cape’s expanded unemployment rate is 15.3 percentage points lower than the national rate of 42.6%.
The expanded unemployment rate takes into account discouraged job-seekers.
In terms of the narrow definition, the Western Cape’s unemployment rate is also the lowest in the country at 22.2%, which is 8.9 percentage points lower than the next best performing province, KwaZulu-Natal, and 11.3 percentage points lower than the national average unemployment rate of 33.5%.
MPP Noko Masipa: “The newest jobs stats show that while there is still much work to be done, the Western Cape is having relatively more success in addressing unemployment when compared to other provinces. A resident of the Western Cape has a significantly higher chance of finding a job, and a lot of that is down to the good work the Western Cape Government has done to create an enabling business environment.”
