Webber Wentzel has appointed Mark Garden as a partner in its Competition, Trade and Investment (CTI) Practice, effective 1 March 2023.

Mark has extensive experience and a depth of knowledge in all aspects of competition regulation (both in South Africa and north of our borders), including behavioural work (cartels and leniency applications, vertical relationships and dominance) and merger regulation (transaction structures, merger clearances, hostile takeovers and negotiating conditions). His proficiency extends to complex competition litigation in South Africa and on the continent.

Mark has worked on some of the most important and high-profile South African competition law cases, as well as in other African competition law and policy regimes (including various national and regional competition regulators).

Webber Wentzel's CTI offering serves as a single point of contact for competition, trade, and investment transactions in various jurisdictions, particularly in Africa. Mark's knowledge of competition in Africa will bolster the firm's CTI offering.

Webber Wentzel's CTI team was established on 1 May 2022, to showcase the firm’s expertise and skill in this area. This practice area works with the various chambers of commerce, regulators, trade contacts at key regional bodies, regional councils, the World Trade Organization, Business Leadership South Africa, Business Unity South Africa, agricultural bodies, marketing associations, investment promotion bodies, and the like, to promote trade and investment in Africa. The team is well known in the market for assisting clients with complex competition law issues and for being able to provide cost-effective business-centric solutions.
