The DA handed over a memorandum to the Tokologo Municipality following a march this morning in Dealesville with local residents and DA councillors to highlight the lack of services in this municipality and the Free State. View memorandum here.

The community of Dealesville united in their adversity to show their dissatisfaction with the poor services. A memorandum was handed over to a representative of the Municipality by Mr Letuka regarding issues relating to the lack of water for 15 days, sewage and refuse pollution in the community, infrastructure decay, electricity interruptions, poor financial and other administration, and the lack of a decent billing system for residents. Residents in Tokologo have reached their saturation point with the poorly ANC-run municipality and the daily decay of basic services and have decided to march with the DA to highlight issues in this regard.

These poor basic services are affecting the constitutional rights of residents to water and a healthy and safe environment across the Free State. Local economies in all towns across the province are similarly shrinking and unemployment is increasing due to the economic impacts of poor services and infrastructure decay, such as roads.

The DA also used this opportunity to present a Free State Water Status Report to the province. The report has been sent to Premier Sefora Ntombela and MEC for COGTA, Mxolisi Dukwana, for further action. The report covers the reasons for service delivery decay due to dysfunctional Free State municipalities. Suggestions are made for a Free Sate municipal recovery plan based on principles of good governance that are implemented in DA-run municipalities across South Africa. View report here.

The DA will continue to play an oversight role over municipal services and place viable recovery options on the local government agenda in the Free State.

Issued by Leader of the opposition in the Free State, Dr Roy Jankielsohn
