Uganda experienced a nationwide blackout yesterday, its third in three months.
Uganda Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd (UETCL) informed the public of the blackout yesterday on Twitter but could not provide reasons for the incident.
“#Nationblackout we are experiencing a nationwide blackout, investigations are ongoing to determine the cause. Bear with us as we work on restoration. Any inconveniences are highly regrettable,” the state-owned utility said.
On June 12 and 13 there were further disruptions to the power supply for 11 and 10 hours respectively for planned maintenance.
The nationwide blackout yesterday marked the third such incident in three months, according to independent digital news platform The Nile Post.
On May 9 there was a nationwide blackout due to a fault that originated at the Kenya Power system, UETCL said in a tweet.
On April 12, another nationwide blackout occurred a couple of minutes before Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni addressed the nation on the Covid-19 situation in the east African country, The Nile Post reported.
UETCL later tweeted a video on April 14, showing a floating island which appeared overnight that affected power generation at both Nalubaale and Bujagali dams.
"The islands just showed up overnight," the utility provider said after apologising for any inconvenience.
The two dams sit on the banks of Lake Victoria, which Uganda borders with Kenya and Tanzania.
According to Worldometer, Uganda has recorded 774 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with no deaths, and 631 recoveries as of June 22.
