Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula with the Minister in the Presidency, Mr Mondli Gungubele, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Ms Patricia De Lille and the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Mr Oscar Mabuyane will conduct an oversight visit to monitor progress on work done by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) to rehabilitate the R61 national road.
This visit is spurred by damage which was caused by persistent rains on the R61 where a bridge culvert on the road collapsed, causing it to sag. This left many road users inconvenienced.
The ministers and provincial government will also conduct an oversight visit to emaXesibeni Tsomo Junction on a newly constructed bridge.
The at South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL), the custodian of the road, has announced plans to remedy the situation.
