The 1972 inquest into the death of Ahmed Essop Timol ("Timol") was formally reopened by the High Court on 26 June 2017, in terms of Section 17A of the Inquests Act 58 of 1959 ("the Act").

The 1972 inquest was held following Timol's death in 1971. The purpose of reopening the inquest is to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of Timol in 1971, in light of further evidence that has been uncovered.
