The Chancellor of the University of South Africa (Unisa), His Excellency former President Thabo Mbeki and the Chairperson of Council of Unisa, Mr Mashukudu James Maboa invite members of the media to attend and cover the inauguration and investiture of Professor Puleng LenkaBula as the Principal and Vice Chancellor of Unisa.
The appointment of Professor LenkaBula at the helm of the university is a hestorical/historical moment for both Unisa and the country as she became the first woman, the first black woman and only the third black person to be appointed as the head of Unisa, Africa’s largest university, in its more than 147 years of existence.
This historical event will take place in hybrid form on Thursday, 2 September 2021 at 16:00 under the theme "Reclaiming Africa’s Intellectual Futures". The inauguration and investiture event will take place at the ZK Matthews Great Hall, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Building, Muckleneuck Campus, Preller Street, Pretoria.
Due to restrictions placed on the number of people allowed for indoor gatherings, only television crew will be accommodated physically at the venue, whereas other members of the media are requested to follow and cover the proceedings virtually.

The inauguration and investiture will be followed by a colloquium the following day (Friday, 03 September 2021), where leading scholars and academics will unpack the theme. Amongst the speakers at the colloquium will be renowned thinkers and commentators such as Professor Adebayo Olukoshi, Ms Malaika Mahlatse, Professor Neil Fassina, Professor Nthabiseng Motsemme, Dr Phil Mjwara and Professor Isabel Casimiro.
