South African voters have until 16:00 on Friday to apply for a special ballot for the 2020 municipal by-elections taking place on November 11.
Applications for special votes can be made using the IEC’s website, or by SMSing your ID number to 32249.
The SMS facility is only for voters applying to cast a special vote at a voting station and not for home visits.
Special ballots are available through home visits for voters who are unable to travel owing to pregnancy, infirmity or disability.
Voters who cannot vote on election day owing to absence from their voting district may also apply to cast a special vote the day before the by-election.
This year, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has revealed that 444 candidates, from 40 political parties, will contest the by-elections.
The IEC has assured that strict Covid-19 protocols will be adhered to during the by-elections.
Voters will be required to use a mask at all times and are also encouraged to bring their own pens.
