ActionSA demands that the Speaker of Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe, answers to allegations of corrupt meddling in the installation of Eskom electricity meters in the Duduza area in Ekurhuleni.

This follows allegations made by the community of Masechaba in Duduza that recently replaced Eskom meter boxes within the area were done without any proper consultation to the community and that Eskom’s chosen contractor had alleged links to the Speaker.

These allegations surfaced during a meeting with the community of Duduza attending by ActionSA President, Herman Mashaba, Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate, Tlhogi Moseki, representatives from CONTRALESA, earlier today.

ActionSA will be filing a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application to Eskom to begin getting to the bottom of these allegations.

That said, the Speaker of Gauteng Legislature and Eskom are not prevented from directly speaking to the community’s allegations; indeed, the principles of ethical leadership, transparency and good governance require nothing less.

Recently, the community of Duduza was left without access to electricity for 5 months following the explosion of a substation supplying power to the area. Instead of repairing the substation, Eskom elected to change meter boxes in the area whilst refusing to restore power to the community.

It was only through the intervention of ActionSA Mayoral candidate, Thlogi Moseki, that power was restored to the area. Through ActionSA’s intervention, 500 households finally received access to electricity. The community continues to demand that Eskom and the City provide reasons for their refusal to meaningfully engage the community on the matter and their prolonged failure to restore power to the area.

Residents in this community and across South Africa are gatvol of the corruption they have endured under the ANC and its henchmen. The community of Duduza demands that allegations of Mekgwe’s connections to Eskom’s contractor be addressed.

ActionSA believes in a zero-tolerance policy for corruption. We will not tolerate the looting and corruption which has gone unabated under the ANC within cities and across the nation; equally so at Eskom.

Corruption only serves to punish innocent communities and deny them access to basic quality services. Every resident deserves access to quality basic services. It is their right and government institutions must work to serve communities.

We will continue to monitor the situation as it develops.

ActionSA Mayoral Candidate, Thlogi Moseki, has committed to continual engagements with the community on their grievance regarding the stable provision of power to the area.
