As South Africa approaches the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, Jacana Media presents Julian Brown's Soweto Uprising: A Documentary History, a powerful and researched account of one of the most significant events in South Africa's history. Drawing on the archives of the anti-apartheid struggle, court records, newspaper reports, personal testimonies and previously untapped sources, Brown reconstructs the events of June 16, 1976 and the months of protest, repression and resistance that followed. More than a history of the uprising, the book offers a vivid encounter with the voices, experiences and realities of those who lived through it.
Rather than retelling the story through self-reflection, this documentary history returns readers to the documents, testimonies and records of the time. By placing these rare and often inaccessible sources alongside biographies and interviews, it opens up new ways of engaging with the uprising and its legacy. The result is an accessible and compelling work that invites readers to explore one of the most pivotal chapters in South Africa's twentieth-century history.
