As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 670,766, with 1268 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 22, bringing the total to 16,398, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.
The provincial breakdown was as follows:
Eastern Cape - 88,892 (13.3 percent)
Free State - 46,128 (6.9)
Gauteng - 219,039 (32.7)
KwaZulu-Natal - 118,731 (17.7)
Limpopo - 15,270 (2.3)
Mpumalanga - 27,021 (4.0)
North West - 29,012 (4.3)
Northern Cape - 16,243 (2.4)
Western Cape - 110,430 (16.5 percent)
Unknown - 0 (0.0)
A total of 4,143,466 tests had been processed to date, of which 15,028 had been conducted since the previous report on Saturday.
"Regrettably, we report 22 more Covid-19 related deaths - seven from the Eastern Cape, five from KwaZulu-Natal, two from Gauteng, five from the North West, and three from the Western Cape. This brings the total number of Covid-19-related deaths to 16,398. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers that treated the deceased patients. Our recoveries now stand at 603,721 which translates to a recovery rate of 90 percent," Mkhize said.
The provincial breakdown was as follows:
Eastern Cape - 3110 deaths, 84,574 recoveries, and 1208 active cases.
Free State - 838 deaths, 31,602 recoveries, and 13,688 active cases
Gauteng - 4203 deaths, 195,417 recoveries, and 19,419 active cases
KwaZulu-Natal - 2626 deaths, 109,960 recoveries, and 6145 active cases
Limpopo - 386 deaths, 14,235 recoveries, and 649 active cases
Mpumalanga - 520 deaths, 25,800 recoveries, and 701 active cases
North West - 355 deaths, 25,800 recoveries, and 2857 active cases
Northern Cape - 197 deaths, 13,225 recoveries, and 2821 active cases
Western Cape - 4163 deaths, 103,108 recoveries, and 3159 active cases
