The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade, Ms Sonja Boshoff, is concerned that although the Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) response to Mr Trump’s recent tweet on X appeared uncoordinated, it could potentially impact on trade relations, leaving many disadvantaged.
“South Africa and the US need each other as trade partners, and under no circumstances should either side entertain the idea of severing ties,” said Ms Boshoff.
She emphasised that the longstanding relationship between the two nations has been characterised by cordiality, decency and mutual respect. “These principles should remain the foundation of our trade relations with the US. Such a foundation will ensure that South Africa–US trade can withstand any diplomatic challenges or tensions that may arise,” Ms Boshoff said.
Mr Trump had alleged that the BRICS nations are working to establish a unified BRICS currency. He has also threatened to impose 100% tariffs and close American markets to BRICS countries if they abandon the dollar for trade purposes. The South African government clarified that these allegations stem from a principled position: BRICS nations advocate trading among themselves using their own currencies.
Ms Boshoff noted that South Africa deeply values the important role the US played during its struggle for freedom, and the nation remains a reliable trade partner and a gateway to African markets.
“We must not jeopardise these historical ties. South Africa is a major beneficiary of AGOA (the African Growth and Opportunity Act) and many exchange programmes in education, innovation, and technology. These relations must endure, bringing mutual benefits to the people of both our countries,” she said.
The Chairperson also remarked that, while not formally codified, it has become an unwritten rule that Presidents of a democratic South Africa maintain cordial relations with US Presidents.
