South African state utility Eskom does not expect to implement scheduled power cuts over the summer months if unplanned losses remain below 13 gigawatts of capacity, Chief Executive Dan Marokane said on Monday.

"So for this coming summer (the) prognosis is that if we stay below 13 000 megawatts of unplanned losses, we will be able to avoid loadshedding," Marokane told reporters, using a term for power cuts.

Eskom has not implemented power cuts in more than 150 days after a dramatic improvement in the performance of its fleet of mainly coal-fired power stations.
