The trade union Solidarity today welcomed the resignation of Zwelakhe Ntshepe, former Denel Chief Executive Officer. “This resignation follows constant pressure by the trade union against Ntshepe and other corrupt management in Denel,” said Deon Reyneke, Deputy General Secretary at Solidarity.
This follows after the trade union has uncovered the government owned company’s corruption and mismanagement through various disclosures since December 2017.
According to Reyneke the Denel dossier that Solidarity revealed in April was the final nail in Ntshepe’s coffin. The dossier highlighted various examples of financial mismanagement and it also disclosed documentation revealing that a bursary to the value of R1,2 million was awarded unlawfully to the son of the North-West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo. “In the report we also asked that Ntshepe be suspended pending an investigation,” said Reyneke.
Reyneke argues that although the trade union welcomes the resignation, it is not the end of the road. “Solidarity won’t hesitate to uncover other corrupt persons in management positions. Corrupt persons in Denel won’t be able to sleep peacefully at night anymore,” warned Reyneke.
Reyneke also said that there should still be a proper forensic investigation with appropriate action and if it’s found that there were criminal offences, criminal charges should follow. “A resignation may not undo any further investigation and action. The CEO doesn’t act in isolation. We also ask that an investigation should determine who is further responsible for the chaos in Denel.”
Solidarity also gave its support to Mrs. Monhla Hlahla, board chairperson of Denel and complimented her for the positive changes that she has already brought about.
