Trade union Solidarity concluded a three-year wage agreement for employees in the mining industry on 21 September 2017. This favourable wage agreement was signed by both Solidarity and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and is valid from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2020.
Adéle Rossouw, organiser at Solidarity, said that employees will receive remuneration retrospectively and that they will also receive an Ex Gratia bonus to the value of R10 000 (after tax) on 27 September 2017. The employees will receive a salary increase of 7,5% to 8% in the first year, depending on the employee’s job level. In addition, employees will also receive an increase of between 7% and 8% in 2019 and 2020, depending on the employee’s job level.
According to Rossouw, various allowances paid to members will also be increased. Among others, these include employees’ medical, shift, assistance and transport allowances. “The agreement provides financial security for members and it also creates hope for financial stability within Assmang.”
According to Rossouw, members have been under immense pressure due to the drastic increase in retrenchments within the Assmang group over the past two years. “Solidarity is satisfied with the agreement. Employees may now look forward to stability in the industry over the next three years,” Rossouw said.
