The Select Committee on Social Services acknowledges the recent announcement made by the Minister of Social Development, Ms Nokuzola Tolashe, regarding the precautionary suspension of Ms Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). We understand that this decision has been taken to facilitate a thorough investigation into her appointment, ensuring that it is conducted without hindrance.
Committee Chairperson Ms Desery Fienies said, “We commend the Minister for her commitment to transparency and accountability, recognising the importance of maintaining public trust in our institutions, especially those that serve our most vulnerable citizens. The challenges faced by SASSA are significant, and it is imperative that we navigate them with integrity and diligence.”
Ms Fienies continued: “In light of the issues raised by the Office of the Public Protector, we support the Minister’s decision to act in the best interest of SASSA and its beneficiaries. It is crucial for the agency to uphold its mandate to provide social assistance effectively and efficiently to those who rely on it for their livelihoods.”
The committee welcomes the appointment of Mr Themba Matlou as the Acting CEO during this period. His leadership will be vital in ensuring that SASSA continues to operate smoothly while the investigation is underway.
The committee remains committed to oversight and will monitor the situation closely to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and expediently.
Issued by the Parliamentary Communications Services on behalf of the chairperson of the select committee on Social Services, Desery Fienies
