The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will started probing the affairs of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, in the Eastern Cape, with President Jacob Zuma's authorisation.
On Tuesday, Zuma authorised the SIU to investigate maladministration in connection with affairs of the municipality, the improper or unlawful conduct by employees of the municipality, as well as the unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property.
The investigation will also cover the alleged unlawful irregular or unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure or practice having a bearing upon state property; intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property, as well as unlawful or improper conduct by any person, which has caused or may cause serious harm to interests of the public or category thereof.
The investigation, according to the Presidency, will cover alleged offences that took place between February 1, 2008 and the date of publication of the proclamation.
The Buffalo City Metro has been dogged by leadership squabbles, court battles and alleged corruption and maladministration.
