The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has applauded the Hawks' arrest of Office of the State Attorney Advocate Hassan Ebrahim Kajee on several fraud charges, after evidence was handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority.
Kajee was arrested on April 1 and appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on April 3. He was released on R20 000 bail and is next scheduled to appear in court on May 25.
He was briefed to represent the State on a number of matters and it was while doing so that his alleged fraud ensued.
“The arrest of Adv. Kajee follows an SIU investigation, which revealed that Adv. Kajee inflated invoices, invoiced for services not actually rendered and overcharged for alleged services rendered. Furthermore, Adv. Kajee would bill that he worked more hours daily than actual hours in the day and invoiced for work on different matters simultaneously,” revealed SIU stakeholder relations and communications chief Kaizer Kganyago.
The SIU is in the process of instituting a civil claim against Kajee to recover about R27-million in damages that the State suffered from his malfeasance.
The SIU reminds the public that fraud and corruption allegations may be reported to siu@hotline.co.za or 0800 037 774.
