The DA Tshwane Caucus applauds the announcement of the dismissal of a high-ranking SAMWU member as a result of their involvement in the torching of a Waste Collection truck. This announcement solidifies the DA's long-standing stance that this unlawful strike in Tshwane is more than just a wage dispute; it is organised crime.
SAMWU has consistently denied any involvement in the destructive, disruptive and illegal strike, however, they must now be taken to task and held accountable for their active participation in this war waged on the City. With a SAMWU REC member actively linked to the bombing of the Waste Removal truck, it is time for SAMWU to take responsibility for the illegal strike that has negatively impacted the lives of the residents of Tshwane.
While opportunistic political parties have sought to place blame on the DA for the current state of service delivery in Tshwane, it is clear from the aforementioned incident that SAMWU bears responsibility for the three-month-long strike, characterised by mounting garbage in our communities, the destruction of municipal vehicles, and the intimidation and shooting of municipal employees. Stakeholders who believe that engaging with criminals is a solution are shortsighted.
This situation reinforces the DA’s stance that a political solution is not the remedy for the current crisis in Tshwane. Despite evidence being provided to SAPS weeks ago, no arrests have been made. What Tshwane urgently requires is the intervention of SAPS to restore law and order in the capital city.
The DA Tshwane Caucus reaffirms the resolve of the Mayor Cilliers Brink in his unwillingness to back down to the violence and destruction perpetrated by SAMWU members. While some have succumbed to pressure and prioritised political expediency over principle, Mayor Brink has remained resolute in his mission to rescue the City of Tshwane from financial ruin. Giving in now would lead to the city’s bankruptcy, causing lasting adverse effects on Tshwane’s residents.
Furthermore, the DA want to express our gratitude to the majority of hardworking Tshwane employees who have continued to serve the city's residents tirelessly to resolve the challenges created by SAMWU.
The DA will persist in its fight for the future of Tshwane, for the well-being of its residents, and against those who seek to bring Tshwane to its knees.
