Representatives of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation will join South African civil society organisations and individuals demonstrating against corruptionon Wednesday.
“There is a great injustice being perpetrated against ordinary South Africans; we are marching for justice and accountable servant leadership,” said the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, Executive Director of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.
“The money that finds its way into the pockets of corrupt politicians, officials, their family members, friends and business associates directly contributes to widening the gap between rich and poor South Africans. It is money that might have been used to improve health care, education and social services. Money that might have been used to provide food and water security – or sustainable electricity.
“We are not politicians; nor do we harbour any political ambitions. As citizens of our country we have elected a government to represent our ambitions and concerns.
"On Wednesday we will march for justice. We will march in support of professional and unbiased investigative and prosecutorial services. We will march in support of our Public Protector, Auditor-General and all other Chapter Nine institutions. And we will march in support of equal justice and equal accountability for all,” Reverend Canon Tutu said.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who would have joined the march had he been fit enough to do so, sent this message to participants:
“A society that assigns resources on the basis of peoples’ proximity to power is no less sinful to one that assigns resources on the basis of skin colour. We live in a beautiful country richly endowed with natural resources. Each is entitled to a fair share. Nobody is more entitled than anyone else – and nobody is more, or less, accountable.”
