The Public Servants Association (PSA), representing thousands of employees of the SA Revenue Service (SARS), is shocked about the fire that broke out at the SARS office in Rissik Street, Johannesburg on 20 September 2023.

The PSA was alerted about the situation by concerned members. The PSA is relieved that there were no injuries or fatalities as a result on the fire. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed but it is thought to have been started by backup generators in the building.

In view of this recent incident, the PSA again calls on government to prioritise occupational health and safety compliance in government buildings in the interest of employees and members of the public. Many government buildings in the Johannesburg central business district are non-compliant with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations

The PSA further urges the Gauteng Provincial Government to also prioritise occupational health and safety compliance in its buildings to ensure that its employees’ safety is not compromised.
