April month marks the 23rd anniversary of freedom month, since the dawn of democracy in 1994. In celebrating the month, the University of South Africa (UNISA) College of Human Sciences is hosting a panel discussion to interrogate the meanings of “Sarafina” the musical in a post-apartheid context.

The panel discussion seeks to create debate in the meanings of “Sarafina” for various people ranging from the producer, cast and audience alike. We aim at developing a vibrant debate that engages with the overall role of the arts in society in the post-apartheid dispensation

The event is taking place as follow:

Date      : Thursday, 26 April 2017
Venue  :Unisa Art Gallery (Muckleneuk Campus, Pretoria)
Time      : 09H00 – 12H00

“This discussion is perceived as a conversation and interactional engagement that is necessary to take place within an academic set up in order to intersect with the arts, as well as the communities the work is set to engage with ” said Professor Puleng Segalo, Head of Research and Graduate Studies Unisa College of Human Science

Below are Panellists to engage in the discussions:

  • Dr Mbongeni Ngema (composer and producer of Sarafina)
  • Dr Nthabiseng Motsemme (Academic Director, NIHSS),
  • Mr Ismail Mahomed (CEO Market Theatre, former CEO Standard Bank-Grahamstown Arts Festival),
  • Mr Aubrey Sekhabi (Artistic Director, South African State Theatre).
  • Ms Sibongile Mkhabela (CEO, Nelson Mandela children’s Funds)
