The Department of Labour took over the site this afternoon to start its inspection to determine the cause of the collapse of the unused pedestrian bridge in the early hours of 9 August.

The site is located on the N3 between the M2 Gildenhuys and N3 Gillooly’s interchanges.

The Department, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and Ekurhuleni DEMS have agreed to procedures for the clearing and preservation of any evidence that can be useful during the investigation.

The cutting up of the bridge started just before 2pm with clearing of rubble continuing and progressing well.

Motorists are still advised to avoid the area.

SANRAL’s General Manager of Communications Vusi Mona says motorists traveling on the N3 eastbound cannot go beyond Gillooly’s Interchange at this stage.

The alternative route to use for motorists travelling on the N3 highway from Johannesburg North is the R24 East and the N12. Those going to Germiston or intending to join the N3 to Durban can use the N12 and then go through Edenvale.

Van Buuren road, the M2 East and West are also not accessible from the N3. Motorists traveling from the airport cannot access the M2 Germiston, N3 Durban and N12 Kimberley and advised to use either the R24 to Johannesburg or the N3/N1 Pretoria.

Motorists on the N3 travelling westbound from Durban will need to detour at the N12 Section 18, take the N1 Section 20 and go around Johannesburg.

SANRAL is working hard to clear the debris and is confident that the road will be open on Thursday morning.
