The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on Tuesday called on the public to refrain from provoking or inciting its members.
SANDF members were deployed to various parts of the country following the unrest that took over parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, last month.
The call from the SANDF follows the circulation of a social media video clip, which shows an alleged taxi driver accosting a member of the SANDF on official patrol duty in Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The defence force said it is an illegal and prosecutable offence to interfere with any law enforcement official on duty, regardless of the circumstances.
“The SANDF remains resolute and committed to its mandate to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic and that does not extend to unleashing brute force or violence against citizens,” it said.
