The South African Human Rights Commission has noted with concern violent incident that took place at Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong, Gauteng Province. The videos on social media show a well-known pastor carrying two pangas accompanied by a man holding a riffle in an altercation at the school.

In response to this disturbing news, Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana, who is responsible for Children’s Rights, visited the school on Tuesday 6th August, to monitor the situation and gather the facts about the incident.

It is alarming that an alleged family dispute over primary residence of children, as confirmed by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) unfolded on school premises in such a violent manner endangering the lives of children, teachers and everyone present. Moreover, children as young as five years old were exposed to high levels of violence, resulting in anxiety, fear and trauma. This incident compromised the children’s right to a safe and supportive learning environment, free from violence, discrimination, and abuse.

Schools are intended to be places of safety where parents entrust the Department of Education to safeguard their children’s well-being. It is concerning that individuals armed with weapons were able to get access to the school premises, highlighting a significant lapse in security.

The Commission notes that a case has been opened with the South African Police Services (SAPS). Additionally, the Gauteng Department of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development (DSD), has implemented measures to provide psychological and social work assistance to alleviate the trauma experience by the learners and teachers.

The Commission will continue to monitor developments and will meet with the Gauteng Department of Education to assess the current safety and security measures in schools. This is to ensure that incidents like the one at Matsediso Primary do not become a norm.
