The 16 members were nominated to benefit from the Strategic Leadership Training course, which is aimed at middle management staff.
The Police Leadership Workshop was designed and delivered by the College of Policing, the professional body for policing in the UK, on behalf of the UK’s National Crime Agency.
The programme focuses on helping delegates develop a better awareness of their natural strengths and areas for development.
‘Within this directorate, we have many officers with the inherent talent to become great leaders and it is incumbent upon us to give them the chance to grow and hone these strengths.
‘The aim of the programme is to equip each leader with the skills to fulfil their potential and lead effectively in a complex and demanding environment,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The course content includes:
- Managing conflict
- Supportive Leadership
- Evidence Based Practice
- Leading investigations
- Creating ‘Psychologically Safe’ environments
- Leading change
It was the first trip to Cape Town for Superintendent Matthew Rose, a senior leadership trainer for the College of Policing.
‘It was an absolute privilege to work with senior leaders from the City’s Safety and Security directorate as their energy and passion for keeping the city and its communities safe was inspiring. Policing is a challenge wherever we work, so it was very rewarding to explore new options and strategies to assist the leaders on the programme, to ensure that they continue to develop themselves, those they lead and their organisation to manage the threats today and in future,’ said Superintendent Rose.
Detective Superintendent Phil Gadd, who is familiar with the South African policing system, has been based in the UK for the past 30 years and focused on the investigative component of the course and specifically for those who aspire to play a leading role in shaping the future of their policing function.
‘It was a privilege to return to Cape Town and provide an input to a group of senior leaders from across different departments who were eager to explore alternative methods. I hope the course will equip these leaders of the future with the correct tools and skills to keep Cape Town residents safe,’ he said.
Alderman Smith was on hand to congratulate the officers who completed the course and encouraged them to apply their new skills and knowledge.
‘Safety and Security is determined to grow the potential of our officers as it not only benefits the directorate, but also our residents,’ added Alderman Smith.
