The Parliamentary inquiry into the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was the main focus of news in South Africa, media monitoring organisation ROiAfrica said on Sunday.
"SA social media was relentless about the SABC inquiry, generating over 2/3 of the charts during the week,” said RoiAfrica’s managing director Tonya Khoury in a statement.
While over one-fifth of all formal news stories dealt with the various controversies of the national broadcaster, the uproar over the pass rate for mathematics at public schools was also a popular topic, as was the stepping down of cricket star AB De Villiers.
Besides the overwhelming interest in the SABC inquiry, social media also recorded ongoing chatter about controversial business family, the Guptas.
Meanwhile, in international news, US president-elect Donald Trump dominated headlines, with nearly two thirds of all stories about the controversial property magnate and TV star turned politician.
The second biggest story around the globe was news about musician Kanye West and his wife, social media star Kim Kardashian.
