The civil rights organisation AfriForum has just received confirmation from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that the organisation has been accredited to act as observer during the general elections scheduled for 7 May 2014.
Willie Spies, legal representative for AfriForum, who will act as convenor for the team, said in a statement that AfriForum believes that free and fair elections are crucial. This is why AfriForum will use its branch structures to deploy observers all over the country.
As civil institution AfriForum has a vested interest in elections that are properly managed. AfriForum will however remain firmly independent from party politics in order to be able to serve the interests of all its members without prejudice. The organisation focuses on the protection of civil rights and the interests of especially minority communities who are being marginalised by government policies.
AfriForum has more than 120 branches in communities across the country, and is uniquely positioned to act as observers during the elections.
