The Portfolio Committee on Police has resolved to invite the Minister of Police, Mr Nkosinathi Nhleko, to appear before the Committee on Wednesday, 7 December 2016 to explain policing-related issues currently in the public domain.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, said the Committee has noted recent reports and investigations involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) leadership and wants urgent clarification on these issues.

Mr Beukman added that the Committee plays an oversight role over the SAPS and IPID and thus needs to be briefed on the leadership challenges in these institutions. "We need assurances that the Executive is dealing with the matters at hand,╡ said Mr Beukman.

Mr Beukman further said it is vital that the Committee is thoroughly briefed on the matters that are currently in the public domain to enable the Committee to make its own assessment about these matters and make appropriate recommendations, where necessary.

"We need stability in our law enforcement agencies at all times and we cannot allow a situation where public confidence in these institutions is eroded by inter-agency conflicts,╡ said Mr Beukman.
The Chairperson reiterated the fact that the public expects law enforcement agencies to focus on the fight against crime, and as such should always make that the number one priority.
