The Portfolio Committee on Police has reviewed its earlier intention to hold a meeting to discuss the implications of the North Gauteng High Court judgement on the appointment of the Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI/Hawks), Mr Berning Ntlemeza.

On 17 March, the Committee said it would apply to the National Assembly for a special meeting to discuss this matter and its consequences in a meeting to be held on Friday, 7 April 2017. However, on learning of the appeals that have been lodged against the court’s decision, the Committee believes it would be premature for it to deliberate on this matter.

“We want to allow these appeal processes to unfold first and, depending on the outcome, see how we deal with the matter. Our meeting would have touched on some of the merits of the case, therefore compromising the appeal processes,” said Mr Francois Beukman, the Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee continues to advocate for stability in the police leadership in the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the DPCI, and will be closely monitoring developments in this regard.

Meanwhile, tomorrow (Wednesday, 5 April 2017) Mr Beukman will be participating in the debate on the “Allocation of police resources” hosted by the Social Justice Coalition, starting at 2 pm. Venue: Isivivana Centre, Julius Tsolo Street, Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

On Thursday, 6 April 2017, Mr Beukman will be delivering an address at the Progressive Business Forum at the Cape Town Club from 1 pm on the most recent activities of the Portfolio Committee on Police and the challenges and opportunities in the policing environment.
