The Portfolio Committee on Police mourns the passing of Judge Essa Moosa, who passed away yesterday morning after a long illness.
“Judge Moosa was a South African of immense integrity who dedicated his life to human rights and the establishment of a new and democratic South Africa. The human rights fraternity in South Africa has lost a very dedicated advocate,” said Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman.
Mr Beukman says the Committee had regular interactions with the late Judge, as he was responsible for the complaints mechanisms of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI/Hawks). “Throughout our numerous interactions with Judge Moosa, he displayed characteristics of an outstanding citizen, an example to many human rights advocates. His role in the achievement of a democratic and human rights-oriented South Africa cannot be overemphasised,” said Mr Beukman.
Members of the Police Committee convey their heartfelt condolences to Judge Moosa’s family and friends. Committee members will have an opportunity to commemorate his contribution to the Office of the DPCI during the committee meeting this Wednesday, 29 February 2017.
