The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture encourages all citizens to watch the movie Kalushi. Besides supporting a proudly South African-made film, Kalushi tells a story of one of the leading freedom fighters in the struggle for liberation.
The film was made with an all South African cast, proof of the country’s depth of talent. “It is important that our stories are told by our people, those who understand the context and background of our history. We have to applaud the confidence that the film makers have shown in local artists,” said Ms Xoliswa Tom, the Chairperson of the Committee.
The Chairperson is also calling on all South Africans to support the film, because it had to overcome many obstacles in distribution. The Committee is disappointed that local films are still considered high risk by distribution houses, compared to offerings from Hollywood. “When people turn up in their numbers, distributors will have no choice but to increase the piece of the pie for local content,” Ms Tom said.
The Committee continues to advocate for full support of South African content to encourage economic development and job creation.
