The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services would like to congratulate Justice Mandisa Muriel Lindelwa Maya on her nomination as president of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA).
The nomination was made by President Jacob Zuma, as the current SCA president, Justice Lex Mpati, retires in May. Justice Maya will become the first female Judge to hold this position.
Committee Chairperson Dr Mathole Motshekga hailed her nomination as victory for transformation and a leap for the advancement, development and promotion of female judges in South Africa. “This shows the country is on the right trajectory regarding gender transformation in the judiciary. Furthermore, Judge Maya is extremely competent to hold this positions as she has proven in the past.”
Justice Maya was appointed deputy president of the SCA in 2015, becoming the first female to hold this position. She served as an acting judge in the High Court in 1999, became a full-time judge a year later, acted in the Labour Court and SCA. In 2006, she was appointed to the SCA.
Dr Motshekga said this clearly shows her calibre of a judge, with a broad range of experience. “The Committee would like to wish Judge Maya well for the selection process. We have complete confidence in her abilities.”
Issued by Parliamentary Communication Services on behalf of the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, Dr Mathole Motshekga
