The allegations contained in the Sunday Times newspaper that the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Thandi Modise, owes Parliament a certain amount of money relating to an incorrectly allocated subsistence and travel (S&T) allowance are false and defamatory.
Parliament wishes to place it on record that at no stage has the Chairperson ever owed the institution any money or incorrectly allocated any S&T allowance, as claimed by the newspaper.
Parliament’s implementation of the remuneration and benefits of Parliamentary Presiding Officers is firmly in line with the Independent Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers. No deviation in this regard has ever occurred.
As part of Parliament’s Executive Authority, through which she jointly heads Parliament with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Modise has been uncompromisingly scrupulous in advocating strict adherence to the legislation and polices governing the institution, and has never acted contrary to their provisions.
