The Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Health Ms Lindelwa Dunjwa would like to express her condolences to the families that have lost six babies.

Media reports state that six newborn babies have died since the beginning of the month at Bongani Hospital in Welkom. Ms Dunjwa said, “I am deeply saddened and sorry by the loss of the newborn babies.”

Ms Dunjwa said she welcomed the investigation that has been instituted by the office of the Health Standards Compliance (HSC). The Committee will wait for the investigation to be concluded and allow for proper processes to be conducted.

“I will send a request inviting the Minister of Health and the office of the HSC to brief the Committee on the exact cause and outcomes of the investigation that led to the death of the babies,” said Ms Dunjwa.
