The GOOD leadership welcomes the election of GOOD Councillor Katriena Robyn as Witzenberg Executive Mayor who will now lead the new coalition in cleaning up the Municipality.
Robyn was elected unopposed this morning after two previous votes - with similar outcomes - were deemed unlawful by the losing DA side.
She will lead Council alongside Petrus Heradien, of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ICOSA), who has been elected as the Speaker, while Witzenberg Aksie's Gert Laban will continue to hold the seat of the Deputy Mayor.
The majority voted to remove the DA-led coalition after several complaints about ongoing corruption and poor service delivery in the Municipality. The new coalition will waste no time in taking action against corrupt, ineffective officials and restore much-needed stability.
As GOOD, we appreciate the support from our coalition partners, as well as the ANC and PA, to stand behind the most experienced candidate even when they have the numbers. Council urgently needs the best person to take charge if we are to improve service delivery and ensure clean governance for the community.
“Trienie” as she is known to her community, brings a wealth of experience to the position after years in local government and will no doubt provide excellent leadership in Witzenberg.
She has previously served as a Mayoral Committee Member, a Deputy Mayor and the Executive Mayor.
Over the years, Robyn has shown nothing but commitment and integrity in her work for the people of Ceres, Tulbagh, Wolseley, Op-die-Berg and Prince Alfred’s Hamlet.
GOOD, along with the new-elected Mayor, remains steadfast in our goal to provide leadership that can build a better and more equitable society for all South Africans, including the residents of Witzenberg.
Issued by Brett Herron, GOOD: Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
