The reconstruction of the Hendrik Potgieter bridge in Roodepoort is progressing well, and residents can expect the work to be completed by the end of November.
This week the Democratic Alliance (DA) conducted an oversight inspection at the bridge to assess the progress that has been made since the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Roads and Logistics visited the site three weeks ago.
Since then, a lot more work has been completed, and the current timelines are being adhered to.
The reconstruction of this bridge after heavy rains again highlights the need for proper and regular maintenance on all our provincial roads.
This entire bridge had to be demolished to ensure that the reconstruction of the foundation of the bridge was done correctly and not a patch-up job.
Every year, the department sets aside a budget for the maintenance of the roads, but more often than not, the budget is not spent for various reasons.
The DA will be closely monitoring the work on this bridge, and we will also be conducting oversight inspections on other provincial roads that are in dire need of maintenance.
