Rand Water has been made aware of a media statement issued by the Gauteng Democratic Alliance (DA) following the DA Gauteng unscheduled visit to Rand Water headquarters in Johannesburg South in the early hours of today (4th October 2023). Rand Water finds it compelled to set the record straight and respond to the inaccuracies and misrepresentations contained in the DA media statement.

Amongst many inaccuracies contained in the DA media statement, the statement claims that the Chief Executive of Rand Water, Mr. Sipho Mosai “would not engage with them [the DA] and drove right pass them [the DA]”. The Chief Executive of Rand Water, Mr. Mosai was not at head office when the DA entourage led by Mr. Solly Msimang arrived unannounced at the Rand Water head office.

Rand Water operates within the boundaries of relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks and upholds the highest standards of transparency and accountability in all its operations. We, therefore, request the DA to work with us in most Municipalities under their leadership to resolve the infrastructure issues that are faced by these municipalities to ensure that the infrastructure is maintained, water leaks are repaired to prevent water losses so that the water that is provided by Rand Water to these municipalities reach the citizens than being lost before it reaches the citizens.

Rand Water is apolitical and professional organisation that serves the needs and aspirations of all South Africans with the ultimate intention to provide sustained bulk portable water to municipalities to enable them to provide water to citizens as part of their Constitutional mandate.

Rand Water’s preference is and has always been to engage with all its stakeholders in constructive dialogue and find mutually beneficial solutions. We therefore remind the Gauteng DA that should they wish to conduct oversight to Rand Water as they alleged during their unannounced visit this morning, to follow the legislative and regulatory framework governing oversight visits as prescribed by Legislatures in which they serve.

We continue to offer our unwavering dedication and commitment to our customers and citizens to providing sustained high-quality bulk drinking water, thus ensuring the country’s sustainable security of its water supply.
