President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the Cairo Summit for Peace on Saturday as the fighting between Israel and Hamas enters its second week.
On the invitation by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Ramaphosa will attend the summit, which is expected to host European leaders as well as Arab and Gulf leaders.
The Peace Summit will discuss the ongoing conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip, with a focus on humanitarian support and the resumption of the peace process.
Ramaphosa has decried the attacks on civilians and the extensive loss of life as the fighting continues.
“South Africa has repeatedly called for the immediate cessation of hostilities, return of hostages and the urgent opening of humanitarian corridors. South Africa stands ready to join the global effort that will bring about lasting peace to the Middle East,” the Presidency said.
