President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday visited families of three East London women who have fallen victim to gender-based violence recently.
According to provincial communications, President Ramaphosa landed at the local airport on Friday morning and was accompanied by Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
Ramaphosa first visited the home of the 19-year-old University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana who was raped and murdered in Cape Town.
He then proceeded to a local hospital where the late boxing champion Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels’ mother had been admitted after sustaining injuries while witnessing her daughter being killed, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend.
Ramaphosa also visited the rest of the Jegels family before making a final visit to the family of 25 year-old Angelique Clark-Abrahams who was raped and assaulted at her home and later died.
Mabuyane is expected to address mourners at the Mrwetyana funeral service to be held on Saturday.
Police Minister Bheki Cele and his Deputy Bhuti Manamela are also expected to attend and address the service.
