On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa met with fellow leaders taking part in the African Peace Initiative relating to the current war in Ukraine carried out by Russia.
Leaders participating in the initiative include Comoros Islands President and current President of the African Union Othman Ghazali, Egyptian President Abdel Fatteh El-Sisi, Senegalese President Macky Sall, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.
“The Heads of State deliberated on the devastating impact the war has had on the people of Ukraine and Russia, as well as the threats this war poses to Europe and indeed the rest of the world if it continues,” the Presidency said.
The African leaders agreed that they would engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the directives for a ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.
The foreign ministers of the respective African countries were entrusted with finalising the details of a road-map to peace.
The respective Presidents also confirmed that they would be available to travel to Ukraine and Russia in mid-June.
