The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), under the stewardship of Transport Deputy Minister, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga will be at the Matsulu (A) Community Hall in Mpumalanga on 10 March 2022, addressing learners on rail safety.

Through its education and awareness endeavours, the RSR identified three schools (Sehlulile Primary; Takheleni Primary and Sibusisiwe High) as befitting schools to benefit from the back-to-school campaign in the area as they are in close proximity to the Matsulu rail line which is 202km starting from Kaapmuiden ending at Phalaborwa. Upon engagement with the schools, it was discovered that two of the schools have previously had learners hit by trains on the same line.

“Railway occurrences remain a huge concern for the RSR as they undermine the efforts and collaborations between the RSR and operators to improve safety”, said Deputy Minister Chikunga.  In line with three of Government’s seven Apex Priorities i.e. Education, Skills and Health, the Deputy Minister will also donate school uniforms, stationery, calculators and sanitary towels to less-privileged learners of the above-mentioned schools.

Members of the media are hereby invited to join the Deputy Minister Chikunga, Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport Mohita Latchminarain, members of the RSR Board, senior officials in the provincial education sphere and other key national and provincial stakeholders.
