The Road Accident Fund (RAF), in partnership with the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) and Western Cape provincial transport authorities, will raise awareness about tyre safety during a workshop in Cape Town on Thursday (17 March) at the Gene Louw Traffic College from 9am. There will be a driver educational programme the next day, during which law enforcement will educate people about the key aspects of tyre safety while providing free tyre checks as part of a drive safer Easter holidays.

These activities form part of the RAF’s efforts to educate motorists about the importance of road safety, while showcasing the RAF’s transformation and focus on customer centricity. Other events have included raising awareness about the use of child restraint car seats when driving with new born babies and infants.  Reflector jackets have also been handed over to cyclists to educate them about visibility when cycling.

“The aim of the workshop and drive educational programme is to promote safe and considerate road usage while encouraging people to conduct regular health checks on their tyres,” said RAF Spokesperson, William Maphutha. “This is in keeping with the new strategic direction that the RAF is embarking on of extending a caring arm while executing a faster and seamless delivery of our products and services.”

SATMC Managing Executive, Nduduzo Chala said: “Tyre safety is a factor in numerous road accidents every year and working with the RAF on this initiative is to address this concern. Working with the RAF is a positive for the SATMC to ensure road users are aware of the tyres they have on their vehicles and that road authorities enforce laws and regulations correctly. These two days are aimed raising awareness on road safety, an important strategic pillar for SATMC.”

The RAF is currently implementing a comprehensive transformation plan, focusing on effective and efficient settlement of claims. As we approach Easter holidays, road users will be educated about: the RAF’s new operating model; minimum requirements for a claim, including information necessary to complete the RAF1 and RAF 3 forms; changes to medical tariffs; funeral benefits; fraud and preventative measures; and the RAF’s new overall strategic direction.

The public can direct all queries to the RAF Call Centre on 0860 23 55 23 between 07h45 to 16h00 from Monday to Friday. Assistance is available in any of the 11 official languages.
