Today R2K has written to the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications raising concerns at the Chairperson’s decision not to release the CVs of the shortlisted candidates for the SABC board and the short time frame for public comments.
The Chairperson confirmed to R2K via telephone this afternoon that the committee will only release the names and the qualifications of the candidates. As R2K, we strongly believe that the people have every right to participate in the appointment of Board members who will be at the helm of the public broadcaster.
The candidates under consideration are applying through a public process to hold a public office. It is therefore crucial for them to have public scrutiny, and to earn the public’s trust.
We have also raised a concern around the time period for public comments. We believe that five working days is simply not adequate time for meaningful participation in this process.
We have asked the Chairperson to respond by Wednesday at 4PM. See attached letter for more information.
